Description
Begin your mornings with this creamy vegan chai-spiced steamer. Made with warm and cozy spices just like those found in a Chai latte but without the caffeine. Serve it hot during cold, chilly mornings, or serve over ice during the warm days of summer. Either way, it’s tasty!
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup raw cashews
- 2 1/2 cups unsweetened oat milk
- 3 Medjool dates, pitted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
Instructions
- Soak the cashews: The cashews can be soaked in a bowl of water overnight or up to 8 hours. Or for a quicker soaking method, place cashews in a bowl with very hot water and allow them to soak for 15 minutes.
- Heat the remaining steamer ingredients: Add the oat milk, dates, vanilla, and spices to a small saucepan and heat over medium heat. Stir gently to combine. This should take just a few minutes.
- Blend: Once the cashews have finished soaking and the other steamer ingredients have been heated in the saucepan pour all of the ingredients into a high-speed blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.
- Serve: Serve in your favorite mug and sprinkle with more cinnamon if you’d like. Savor the flavor of your creamy spiced steamer.

Substitutes for unsweetened oat milk: If you don’t need your steamer to be vegan, you can swap out the oat milk for regular milk. You can also use any other dairy-free milk that you enjoy (coconut milk would be good too!). Oat milk will probably make your steamer a little creamier and thicker though compared to other non-dairy milk options. Also, if you can’t find unsweetened oat milk in your grocery store, the regular oat milk will work also. Just know that most oat milk, if it’s not unsweetened, contains added sugars so you may want to adjust the amount of the Medjool dates you put in.
Customize your steamer to your flavor preferences. If you like your chai-flavored steamer a little more on the spicy side try adding in some finely ground black pepper. If you like it sweeter, add another date or maybe a little more vanilla. You can also increase or decrease any of the spices in this recipe to your liking!
Switch things up and serve it cold. If you’re not in the mood for a hot beverage, serve it over ice (similar to an Iced Chai Latte) or blend it with ice to turn it into a frappé.
