The BEST smoked salmon dip that ever existed! Easy to prepare using only 7 ingredients. The perfect appetizer for ANY party. Only 5 minutes to prepare!
It’s not too soon after last month’s holiday splurge fest to splurge again is it? I don’t want to be the one to whisper temptations in your ear to set aside your Whole30, Sugar-Free January, Meatless Monday, Vegan January Challenges…so I’m not going to do that.
Would you like some smoked salmon dip with dill and capers?
Instead, I’m going to give you something to look forward to when February 1st hits and
Have you ever heard of the 80/20 rule? It’s about eating healthy, nutritious, clean foods at least 80% of the time and then living your life the other 20%. For example, 80% veggies and 20% let’s dress those veggies up with a whole block of cream cheese and a wallop of sour cream.
Maybe my 80/20 ratio is a little off with this dip…but we NEED something for Super Bowl Sunday so let’s not worry about ratios. Math was never my thing anyway.
A friend introduced me to this amazing smoked salmon dip bliss at a holiday party last year. The story on the dip goes something like this, I think…
There once was a guy who determined to make the most amazing smoked salmon dip that ever existed.
The guy experimented and went through many iterations of smoked salmon dip with each iteration getting a little bit better but never quite reaching dip bliss-dom.
After many tries, one day the guy suddenly had a smoked salmon dip eureka moment.
He shouted, “Eureka!”
Guy brought the
Many people ate the dip and also said, “Eureka!”
A friend of the guy begged the
He gave it to her because he is nice like that.
The friend brought the
The friend said to me, “Try this dip, it’s AH-mazing!”
But the party had no gluten-free crackers (cue sad face).
The friend
I said to the
After eating a
The guy gave the
The end.
Now go make this smoked salmon dip.
Even though this dip tastes so fancy and AH-mazing, it comes together quicker than a Trumpian tweet. Just 7 ingredients.
Throw the first six (cream cheese, sour cream, fresh dill, capers, red onion, and lemon juice) in a food processor and pulse until mixed. Then add in your smoked salmon and pulse again until everything is mixed up and the salmon is still slightly chunky.
Grab some crackers, chips, or veggies (cuz 80/20) and dive in!
Now repeat after me, “I will share this dip with others. I will not hide in a corner with this dip and a box of crackers (or just a spoon) and eat the entire bowl of dip.” You would be eating a whole block of cream cheese and a small-ish bowl of sour cream if you did that.
Remember the 80/20 rule. 80% for you, 20% for them. Share the splurge.
And then give a shout out to the nice guy who shared his perfect smoked salmon dip with you and me. I don’t know your name Nice Guy, but thank you very VERY much for creating and sharing this dip. You just made the world a little bit tastier.
Now if only February could get here a little more quickly.
Would you like some smoked salmon dip with dill and capers? 😉

Smoked Salmon Dip with Dill & Capers
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 0 minutes
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: Makes about 2 cups 1x
Description
The best smoked salmon dip that ever existed! Easy to prepare with only 7 ingredients. The perfect appetizer for any party.
Ingredients
Smoked Salmon Dip
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- ยฝ cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons capers, plus additional for garnish
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped, plus additional for garnish
- 2 tablespoons red onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 4 ounces smoked salmon (make sure all the bones have been removed)
Ideas for Serving
- gluten-free crackers (I really like these fine ground sea salt almond crackers with this dip. I found them at Costco.)
- chips (I like these sweet potato chips.)
- gluten-free flatbread
- veggies like cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, endive, carrots, or zucchini
Instructions
- To a food processor, add cream cheese, sour cream, capers, dill, red onion, and lemon juice and pulse (instead of blend) to combine. Add smoked salmon and pulse a few more times until combined but also allowing the salmon to remain a little bit chunky. I prefer this dip to have some texture versus turning it into a purée.
- Garnish with fresh chopped dill and capers. Serve with with your favorite gluten-free crackers, chips, flatbread, or vegetables of choice!

I am not sure if it is legal to make such tasty things?! This salmon dip makes me crazy! I tried to make it once and now I can not stop making it again and again. Despite the fact that this dish is not really healthy, I cook it stably every couple of weeks. My family loves that too. And what if we dare replace the chips with pieces of vegetables? I think the taste will be no worse :))) Thank you for the idea! Keep it up.

Thank you Anna! So glad to hear that you and your family love this recipe so much! I think vegetables in place of the chips would be just as fantastic! โค๏ธ

That smoked salmon does not look like the kind we have here in NYC! More like hot smoked? Not a bad thing, just different.
Shannon says
Hi Lauren! You’re right! Smoked salmon can be both cold or hot smoked. The salmon in this is hot smoked. Your local NYC Whole Foods should have some hot smoked salmon if you decide to try out this dip!

What a fun story! Yes, thank you nice guy! Great name…by the way! I’m all about the 80/20 rule. I do macro level nutrition and I get a cheat meal once a week. So there you go…kinda 80/20 right there! I love to splurge every once in awhile! And that dill – yum! One of my all time favorite ingredients ever!!

Volaine says
Hi, can I use the cold smoked salmon variety. Thatโs what I had bought to make my dip and then I saw your AMAZING recipe!,
Shannon Emery says
Hi Volaine! I haven’t tried cold smoked salmon in this recipe myself just because of the difference in texture. It would definitely change the consistency of the dip. I also don’t think the cold smoked salmon would process as well in the food processor. You could give it a try though and see how it goes!
